Before Your Surgery
Once you have decided to proceed with the surgery, you will come back to the office to arrange pre-operative testing. Do not take any over the counter medications or dietary/vitamin supplements for 10 days prior to your surgery without first clearing them with us. Many medications contain aspirin or other substances which can make you bleed during or after the surgery.

During The Surgery
Most surgeries are done with a general anesthetic in a hospital or surgery center. Patients go home the same day from the surgery center, and many will do the same from the hospital, though patients have the option of staying overnight at the hospital.

After The Surgery

Implants take some time to settle into position under the muscle. Shown above is a patient of Dr. Loomis', before surgery, 1-2 weeks after surgery, 4 weeks after surgery, and after complete settling of the implants. This complete settling usually takes about 6-8 weeks.

After surgery by Dr. Loomis, an ace wrap is placed around your chest on the upper portion of you breasts only. Keep this wrap on until the next morning. At that time you can remove all of the dressings to shower, washing the incisions under the arm gently with soap and water. After showering, replace a dry gauze over the incisins and wrap the ace bandage around the upper portion of your chest, just down to the nipples. Do not cover the lower portion of the breasts. Starting the day after your surgery, you will do stretching exercises to help the implants settle. It is normal for the top portion of the breasts to look abnormally full at this time. Do the exercises throughout the day, wearing a tee-shirt or camisole; do not wear a bra (not even a sports bra) as this will compress the lower portion of the breast and may prevent settling of the implant. Continue to wear the ace wrap over the top of the breasts at night. When the implants are in their proper position, you will be given the OK to wear a bra again.

There is a significant amount of discomfort following the surgery, similar to muscular pain. Patients have referred to it as similar to doing "100 push-ups" . It is usually difficult to sleep on your side or stomach for a week or two. While you will be getting around quite well within a few days, there will be a gradual resolution of the sorness over a few weeks. Wait 8 weeks before doing any heavy exercise involving the chest muscles. You can begin general aerobic exercises not involving the chest musles one week after surgery. We will give you prescriptions for pain medication and posssibly for an antibiotic. While taking the pain medication, take Metamucil or another laxative to avoid constipation. If taking antibiotics, eat a cup of yogurt about 2 hours after each dose to help avoid the diarrhea that can be caused by antibiotics. In the future, take antibiotics before and after any dental work to help avoid the risk of developing any infection around the implant. If you need a prescription, just call the office when you know you will be having dental work and we will call in the antibiotic prescription to your pharmacy.

Note: These instructions are for Dr. Loomis' patients only. Different techniques require different pre and post-operative care. If you are having surgery or treatment elsewhere you need to follow your own surgeon's instructions.
