Botox and Dysport

Botox® Cosmetic is a purified form of a chemical that is naturally produced by certain bacteria. It is used to treat facial wrinkling or lines that are caused by contracting muscles, particularly those between and around the eyes. When Botox is injected into a particular muscle, it can produce a weakening of that muscle for 3-4 months or longer. This movie describes "What it was like..." in a patients own words. Our voluntary muscles contract when stimulated by nerve impulses. This stimulation involves the release of a chemical, a neurotransmitter, at the muscle surface which then binds to a receptor on the muscle. Botox has a similar structure as this neurotransmitter and competes with it for the receptor sites. While the body's chemical is quickly released and the muscle can again be stimulated to contract, the chemical in Botox® Cosmetic binds to these receptors much more strongly and is not released for several months, blocking the body's chemical messenger throughout that time.

Botox has been in use for many years, primarily to treat spasm of the muscles around the eye, and for crossed eyes. More recently, it has been utilized for facial wrinkles. The doses of Botox Dr. Loomis uses do not cause any toxic effect, but it can migrate slightly from its point of injection. If it spreads to the muscle which lifts the eyelid, it may cause a temporary drooping of the eyelid. Dr. Loomis has been performing Botox injections for facial wrinkles since 1996, without ever seeing this complication.

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Dysport. Like Botox, this latest wrinkle fighter is a modified version of botulinum toxin A and inhibits facial muscle contractions that over time lead to forehead lines, frown lines and crows feet. It is still unclear whether Dysport will be an improvement over Botox or just a healthy competitor. Studies indicate that Dysport possibly disperses more widely than Botox Cosmetic when injected, which may make it more desireable for some areas and perhaps less so for others.
