Otoplasty

An Otoplasty treats abnormally shaped ears, most commonly overly prominent ears. Children can unfortunately be quite cruel with each other when it comes to prominent ears. Because of this, we will often perform an otoplasty on school age children, although adults can also undergo the procedure.

The prominence of the ear is often due to a lack of a normal fold of the ear, the antihelical fold. The ears may also be prominent due to an excessively large conchal cartilage, an area of cartilage in the center of the ear. In some cases it is a combination of these two situations.

The surgery is generally done under local anesthesia. If there is excessive cartilage, it is trimmed. If there is a lack of the antihelical fold, a new one is created. Dr. Loomis uses a suture technique to do this through a small incision on the back side of the ear.
