Spider Veins
Unsightly spider veins on the legs can be treated with injections to lighten and in some cases completely obliterate the clusters of thin superficial vessels. The type of treatment that Dr. Loomis provides for spider veins is cosmetic in nature and as such is not covered by most health insurances.
Dr. Loomis injects the veins with a sclerosing agent through a very small needle. Most patients note minimal discomfort with the injections. The process usually takes from 10 to 20 minutes depending on the number of spider veins you have.
The effectiveness of the injections varies between patients. While some patients will have a complete resolution after one injection, most will require several separate sessions to achieve about an 80% lightening. The veins look worse at first, becoming darker. They then lighten over a course of time which also varies between patients. Although some will look good after a few weeks, you should expect them to appear dark for several months. For this reason, the fall, winter and early spring months are the most popular for spider vein injections.
For treatment of spider veins of the face (telangiectasias), see the information on the V-Beam Laser under the laser hair removal section (click "The Laser Center" and then the "Laser Hair Removal" link in the border to the left).
